INFORMATION

Foreign driver’s licenses are only recognized if they were obtained during a stay of at least 12 consecutive months in the issuing country and this can be appropriately verified. Guidelines for the control drive.

CONTROL DRIVE

The following must be brought to the control drive:

• The original foreign driver’s license
• The vehicle registration document of the test vehicle
• Identification documents (passport, foreigner’s ID, or ID card) in original
• The invitation to the driving test
• A roadworthy vehicle

CONSEQUENCES OF FAILING THE EXAMINATION

If the person fails the control drive, the driver’s license will be revoked, and the foreign driver’s license will be annulled. The examination cannot be repeated (Art. 29 Road Traffic Licensing Ordinance).
If the person misses the test without excuse, it will be considered a failure. The authority must inform the person of this consequence when scheduling the control drive.
After failing the driving test, the person can apply for a learner’s permit if they wish to regain authorization to drive. However, if the control drive was ordered due to medical reasons, it must first be clarified whether the person meets the minimum medical requirements for operating a motor vehicle.

REQUIREMENTS

To exchange a foreign driver’s license for a Swiss driver’s license, you will need the following documents:

• Foreign driver’s license (must be submitted)
• Application form
• Vision test not older than 24 months

The following will be tested:

• Proper vehicle operation
• Correct lane usage
• Knowledge of general traffic rules
• Understanding of right-of-way rules
• Behavior in traffic
• Anticipatory driving
• Driving based on road signs
• Driving on highways and expressways

In future control drives, at least two maneuvers must be tested. The emergency braking maneuver must be tested in every control drive.
